Milestone in the Gotthard Base Tunnel - first breakthrough by a tunnel boring machine

The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the Gotthard Base Tunnel started out in the east tunnel from Bodio in November 2002. Two months later, the second TBM started driving in the west tunnel. A number of different geological zones had to be overcome along the approximately 15 km route to the multifunction station at Faido. The highly diverse geology impaired driving progress. Modifications to both TBMs brought sharp improvements. In December 2005, with 38 metres, the TBM in the east tunnel attained the highest daily advance rate of any TBM in the Gotthard Base Tunnel to date.

Evaluation of membrane pre-treatment to further wastewater reuse

CDM recently completed an in-depth, two-phase study to assess the potential for membrane technologies to expand the reuse of secondary effluent. Commissioned by the Water Environment Research Foundation, CDM, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conducted research that will guide utilities and regulatory agencies in expanding wastewater reuse. Since rapid urbanization and severe regional droughts make it clear that fresh water supplies cannot continue to indefinitely meet water demands, wastewater reuse will be needed to ensure water sustainability.

Long-term maintenance planning for increased efficiency in managing underground utilities

When utilities plan maintenance measures for network assets, they first have to decide which assets should be targeted. Nowadays these decisions are often still made from a vast empirical knowledge, accumulated in these utilities over decades. Apart from the fact that empirical-based decisions are often difficult to explain to non-technicians or economists, there is still the danger of missing an aspect due to the size of these networks. STATUS supports the planning process and the inherent decisions by providing an analytical framework, enhancing the planning process, giving long-term planning safety and continuity.

Niranjan Swarup [Executive Director of the Indian Society for Trenchless Technology (INDSTT)]

Trenchless Pipeline Management

Urban lifelines are the assets of the society and trenchless techniques provide avenues for Management of such assets which otherwise are being left neglected and deteriorating rapidly. Urban pipelines, when conceived, were meant to provide passage to fluids like water, rain runoff, sewage, petroleum, or other energy products. Primary consideration of employing a pipeline for such transportation has been that such mode yields the most economic and viable as the fluid flowing through them is not exposed anywhere and therefore there would be very slim chances of it getting polluted or polluting the environment en route to the intended destination.
