Tunnelling commences at The Bays

Jan 31, 2024

Tunnel boring machines Daphne and Beatrice are preparing to relaunch at the Sydney Metro West site at The Bays, New South Wales.

In preparation, hundreds of precast tunnelling segments have been delivered to support tunnelling activity.

Daphne and Beatrice first launched last year and progressed significantly in their journeys, having installed approximately 30,732 segments to line the new tunnel walls. Each weighing about 1300 tonnes, the TBMs are the final two of six mega tunnelling machines for the Sydney Metro project.

At the eastern side of the site, work has commenced to prepare the 32m-deep station box for the launch of two new TBMs from They Bays to tunnel under Darling Harbour towards the city in mid-2024. Previously, Daphne and Beatrice broke through to arrive at Five Dock Metro Station. Daphne broke through first before Beatrice, after building the 4.3km section of metro tunnel from The Bays to Five Dock for seven months.

By connecting Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, Sydney Metro West aims to double the rail capacity between Sydney’s two biggest CBDs once passenger services commence in 2030.

Construction started on Sydney Metro West in 2020. The 24-kilometre metro line has stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.
