Egg-cellent sewer under chicken farm

Homes in Vines Cross Road and Millbrook Close, Horam, will be further safeguarded against flooding thanks to work being carried out by Southern Water.

A 300m “egg” shaped sewer is being installed beneath Brookside and Riverside chicken farm as part of the £750,000 environmental improvement scheme, which will also involve an overflow chamber being upgraded and the existing sewer across Waldron Ghyll being upsized.

Contractors 4Delivery are carrying out the work on behalf of Southern Water to help prevent flooding to properties during heavy rain, when the existing sewer can sometimes become overloaded.

The new sewer will provide greater capacity to alleviate flooding and will help prevent extra storm water from discharging to the Waldron Ghyll, in line with European water quality standards.

Gary Sayers, Senior Contracts Engineer for Southern Water, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to help protect residents’ properties from flooding. At times of heavy rainfall, the new overflow tank and sewer will be better able to hold storm water than at present.”

Work begins in January, 2007 and is expected to be complete by the summer.

The projects are part of Southern Water’s five-year environmental improvement programme as the company works hard to tackle the risk of flooding from sewers across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

4Delivery is a consortium comprising United Utilities, Costain and MWH. It is carrying out £750 million worth of environmental improvement and water quality schemes across the Southern Water region.
