Engineer wins top award

Jun 05, 2012

Trainee sewer rehabilitation engineer Alex Aulds won Young Engineer of the Year at The United Kingdom Society of Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) awards, beating a number of entries from national utilities for his work.

The award recognised Alex's involvement in sewer renovation schemes using specialist liners, reinforced with glass and cured by UV light. Wessex Water uses the technique as an alternative to traditional pipe replacement to increase the lifespan of sewers.

Alex, who is based at Kingston Seymour sewage treatment works in Somerset, said that he was thrilled to have scooped the award as well as a bursary to visit Universities in North America to expand his knowledge.

He said: "It is a huge privilege to have won this award as I was competing against the best young engineers in the UK. I owe a lot to Wessex Water and in particular my manager who has supported me every step of the way."

Alex forms part of the innovative team of Wessex Water which comprises experienced staff from both water and sewerage services. Their work leads the way for trenchless construction techniques in the region and involves repairing pipes from the inside using liners, robots and UV lighting, which all significantly minimise disruption.

Alex's manager Julian Britton said: "I am delighted that Alex has won this prestigious award and has been recognised for his cutting edge technological approach to lining strategic sewers with UV cured glass liners. Alex will be experiencing new concepts on his secondment to North America and will be giving a lecture at the North American Society for Trenchless Technology conference."

The rehabilitation team at Wessex Water has gained both national and international accreditation for their work at past award ceremonies and said they hope to continue their successes at awards in 2012.
