NSF International Launches NSF Passport Program™ to Help Companies Attain Global Market Approvals for Water Treatment, Distribution and Plumbing Products

Dec 14, 2011

The NSF Passport Program™ provides a single NSF point of contact to manage multiple country approvals, saving time and money in bringing products to global markets.

NSF International, a global organization that certifies products and writes standards for food, water and consumer goods, has launched a new program to help manufacturers gain global market access for water treatment, distribution and plumbing products.

The NSF Passport Program: Your Access to Global Market Approvals™ helps companies achieve product certifications required in major and emerging global markets such as the UK, Australia, Brazil, China, Italy, France, Japan, and many others.

The NSF Passport Program™ manages the complex approval process, helping companies navigate the various regulatory, testing and certification requirements in each country to gain entry into new international markets. NSF Passport™ provides companies with a single point of contact and combines testing and auditing services, saving both time and reducing cost by managing multiple country approval projects from the initial application to final approval.

“This service is completely unique to the water industry,” said Pierre Sbabo, Vice President of NSF International Water Programs. “Manufacturers of water treatment, distribution and plumbing products must meet multiple rigid and complex regulatory requirements to sell and compete in major markets, and these requirements can vary between countries and certification types. It has taken NSF years to develop a program that facilitates product certification for customers in more than 25 major and emerging global markets. NSF had to meet certification requirements specific to each country and certification body, which included completing multiple laboratory audits and earning numerous accreditations. Because NSF International has global offices, we were able to overcome the added challenges of language and time zone barriers.”

“The NSF Passport Program™ helps manufacturers access all top and key emerging markets for water products. Importantly, customers are able to work with a local NSF International project manager, in their local language and time zone, through NSF’s global network of offices,” said Sbabo.

NSF International has more than 50 years of experience developing national standards for water products that range from plumbing products and municipal water treatment and distribution components, to residential water treatment systems. NSF developed the American national public health standards for all chemicals used to treat drinking water and materials/products coming into contact with drinking water. In 1988, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) replaced its own drinking water programs with these NSF standards, which are now the national standards for drinking water treatment chemicals and system components.
