TMDL 2009 Conference will take place in Alexandria on next sunday

Alexandria, Va. - The Water Environment Federation (WEF) will present TMDL 2009: Combining Science and Management to Restore Impaired Waters from August 9-12, 2009 at the Hilton Minneapolis in Minneapolis, Minn. Co-sponsored by the Central States Water Environment Association, with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Advisory Committee on Water Information, and the Water Environment Research Foundation, this conference will focus on the Clean Water Act and the full scope of pollutants that impact our nation’s water bodies.

The TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) requirements of the Clean Water Act play a pivotal role in how and if the nation meets its water quality goals. Recognizing the importance and continually evolving nature of the program, this conference is designed to help water professionals, states, tribes, and local organizations develop and implement effective TMDL programs by providing access to the latest tools and information. Most importantly, it provides a forum for stakeholders from all sides of the issue to discuss and understand each other’s positions. TMDL 2009 will include podium presentations, panel discussions, and workshops on the following topics:
  • Pollutant-Specific TMDLs: Including nutrients, bacteria, sediment, metals, toxics, and others.
  • Water Quality Standards: Development of site-specific criteria and refining its uses, listing methodology and integrated reporting, use attainability analysis, interpretation of noncompliance with standards, and narrative standards.
  • Modeling: Data needs, model uncertainty, calibration and verification, design and selection.
  • Stormwater and Nonpoint Source Issues: Urban and agricultural best management practices, measuring and estimating wet weather pollutant loads, agricultural and urban runoff characterization.
  • Stakeholder Involvement and Public Participation: Public participation and outreach tools, conflict resolution, including nonpoint source stakeholders, third-party TMDLs, and the influence of stakeholders on allocation and implementation.
  • Regulatory, Policy, and Implementation Issues: Adaptive implementation and phased TMDLs, wastewater and stormwater permitting issues, water quality trading, regulatory flexibility, and interjurisdictional TMDLs.
  • Other Related Current Issues and Topics

Encouraged to attend are consultants, municipal wastewater and water treatment professionals, industrial wastewater and water treatment professionals, local, state, and federal regulators, model users and designers, scientists and researchers, watershed groups, civil and environmental engineers, association representatives, and community planners.
