VINCI wins a tunnel construction contract in the United States

Nov 26, 2008

VINCI Construction Grands Projets, leader (65 %) of a joint-venture with the American contractor Frontier-Kemper Constructors Inc. (35 %), recently signed a contract with the City of Detroit (Detroit Water and Sewerage Department) to build a tunnel for carrying treated wastewater from the city for discharge into the Detroit river.

This contract, worth US$299 million (around €230 million), involves digging a 1.9km tunnel with an interior diameter of 6.5m using a pressurized-mud tunnel boring machine. This technique, as yet little used in the USA, is one of VINCI Construction Grands Projets' particular areas of expertise.

Work will start in mid-November 2008 and should be completed by December 2012.

VINCI Construction Grands Projets is one of the world's leading tunnel specialists, with numerous references in France and elsewhere in the world, including such recently completed projects as the Hallandsas Tunnel in Sweden, the Mitholz Tunnel in Switzerland, the A86 Duplex in the West of Paris, the tunnels for Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom and for the Cairo, Algiers, Athens and Budapest metros. In the USA, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, in a joint-venture also including Frontier-Kemper Constructors Inc. along with Parsons RCI Inc., is building two tunnels for the new Brightwater wastewater treatment plant in King Country, North of Seattle.

Over the last 15 years, VINCI Construction Grands Projets has dug 730 km of tunnels.
